HEEON: Single Equalities: A Multi Dimensional Approach
This two-day conference organised by HEEON (Higher Education Equal Opportunities Network) will take place on Wednesday 2 - Thursday 3 July 2008 at Scarman Training & Conference Centre, The University of Warwick, Gibbet Hill Road, Coventry, Warwickshire.
Developing Single Equality Schemes presents a new challenge for Equality Practitioners in Higher Education. As we know, this is not just a matter of merging policy documents but of exploring the principles of how best to meet the diverse needs and interests of people represented by different equality strands.
This aim of this conference is:
- to examine and debate some of the conflicts and challenges this new approach presents and provide examples from within and outside the sector about how to tackle the issues.
The objectives of this event are for delegates to have:
- Learned more about the CEHR’s and HEFCE’s approach to developing an equitable approach to work on the six equality strands
- Explored the advantages and disadvantages of developing and working within Single Equality Schemes
- Participated in a review of experience to date
- Debated the question of balancing the interests represented by different equality strands and dealing with inter-sectional conflicts
- Gained a better understanding of how to undertake holistic equality impact assessments and how to encourage colleagues to participate in these
