UNIPOL: Housing Returning Students (Leeds)
This newly revised training seminar will be run on Friday 20 June 2008 in Leeds. The day should be of interest to all those who have an interest in non-allocated accommodation and who work with landlords, the local authority, students and students' unions, the community and local agencies to provide a good ongoing and caring accommodation service after the first year.
The private sector continues to house 48% of all full time students. The rise of purpose built high density student accommodation has reduced many institutions’ reliance on small private sector houses for their first year students but after that most second and returning students have the freedom to decide on where to live and whether to rent from the institution in another part of the portfolio or in off street shared student housing.
How important is it that the institution engages with private sector housing and suppliers in their town? Is student housing all about recruitment and after that students can fend for themselves or, as this seminar will explore, have institutions an ongoing role in ensuring that the properties their students live in for most of their time at College or University provide a high quality student experience? Is it important that you house returning students yourselves?
How can:
- educational establishments intervene into the private housing market to ensure a positive student experience is maintained?
- stop ill-informed decisions being taken too early in the year?
- providers retain students within their portfolio?
- students and landlords play their part in renting the right property at the right time at an affordable price?
This one day seminar will look at methods of practical intervention with the private sector and private landlords and explores options that allow educational establishments to positively influence both the student and supplier experience to the benefit of both. Both practical and strategic interventions are explored in an interactive round table manner.
The day will be led by Liz Hodgen, Deputy Chief Executive, Unipol Student Homes and throughout the day other speakers will include Simon Kemp, Code of Standards Officer, Nicola Brown, Accommodation Bureau Team Leader, Geneve Smith, Housing Services Manager and Rachel Campey, Housing Manager.
The seminar will take place at Unipol Student Homes' new Board Room Annex at the Accommodation Bureau which is at the centre of the Leeds property market serving 42,000 students.
