1300 Choice of one case study workshop:
1. University of Chester
Student Support and Guidance and Careers and Employability at Chester have recently been awarded 5* Recognised for Excellence by the British Quality Foundation. The award is based on the EFQM Excellence model. Following the University's interest five years ago in applying the model, and a successful application for HEFCE Leadership and Management funding, the departments engaged in an extended process of staff development and quality enhancement, working towards external assessment. While one outcome has been the award, there has also been a significant impact on the way we manage our processes and measure and evaluate the impact of our work. This workshop will enable participants to look more closely at the EFQM model and its application to evaluation in Student Services.
2. University of Salford
The University of Salford is undergoing a significant change programme to bring the University and its culture into step with the new expectations of students from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds. The creation of a new Directorate of Student Life is part of the changing emphasis on a truly excellent student experience. This workshop will investigate how we have used feedback and evaluation both within Salford and across the sector to design the new service, and how monitoring, evaluation, and feedback will form the backbone of our development for future generations of students. The workshop will be led by managers of the new services and they will bring their ownexperiences of using evaluation and student feedback to what should be a lively discussion about how we keep at the forefront of our changing student services sector.
3. University of Sheffield
Student Services at the University of Sheffield has an established commitment to evaluating service quality with an array of monitoring tools across our range of services and an overarching ‘Service Improvement Team’ to co-ordinate the evaluation work. During 2008-09 we are re-assessing our evaluation systems, aiming for a more holistic approach based on the impact of our provision. The objective is a richer, more sophisticated, form of evaluation which encourages reflection on purpose and impact, rather than straightforward customer satisfaction. Come along to this workshop to discuss our developing work. Hear about the way in which we have built up our existing monitoring and feedback systems, and contribute to our work in progress to reconsider evaluation in terms of the impact of our services within the overall student learning experience.
4. Teesside University
Seeking accreditation under MATRIX standards requires demonstrating that evaluation and feedback are embedded in every day practice and that feedback is used in further planning and development. To staff working in a complex department, evaluation and feedback can seem secondary to the activity of dealing with service users' concerns. Far from embedded - it can all seem distant - at best another burden; at worst rather scary. The approach we took at Teesside was not to add ever more tasks - but rather to work with staff using the MATRIX framework, to reveal how they already used and understood evaluation and feedback every day in what they routinely did, and to build on that strength. Hear about our experiences in this workshop.
5. University of the West of England (UWE)
Student Services at University of the West of England, Bristol has been significantly restructured over the past two years and is now in a process of consolidation. We are looking critically at how we evaluate what we do in all parts of the department. We are aware that quality of evaluation is uneven, and this needs to be addressed. We also want to use this as an opportunity to look at how the review of evaluation can - in itself - help us to improve our business processes. This is very much work in progress. In this workshop we are as open to your input as we are to sharing our experience.
1430 Closing plenary session
Chaired by Kate Dodd, Director of Student Life, The University of Birmingham.
The day will conclude by 1600.
