Sexual harassment and misconduct - supporting students Sexual harassment and misconduct: supporting students

This professional development event for Student Services leaders in higher education discusses supporting students in cases of sexual harassment, violence or misconduct. Focusing on how Student Services respond when cases arise, this event explores current good practice, sector guidance, legal implications and what we can all do differently to improve.

Join us to think about key questions in this area, including:

  • How can we tailor our services to most effectively support all students involved (reporting and responding students, and survivors of sexual violence and harassment)?
  • How can we ensure that we support different student groups that may be especially vulnerable to harassment, and share their experiences (for example LGBTQI+, international students)?
  • What can we learn from this support activity and how do we communicate this effectively to students?

The event is led by AMOSSHE Vice Chair (Professional Development) Chris Warrington (University of Leeds) and AMOSSHE Executive Member Sarah Sweeney (Lancaster University).

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Oliver Curran (Vice Chairman, AUCSO - Association of University Chief Security Officers) who discusses how security teams can collaborate effectively with Student Services, and how we can work together to communicate support activity to students.
  • Lizzie Dunford (Principal Solicitor for Technology and Data Protection, Coventry University) who gives an overview of Universities UK’s recent guidance about sharing personal data in harassment cases.
  • Geraldine Swanton (Legal Director, Shakespeare Martineau) who leads a workshop about the principles of addressing student complaints in this area, and the implications of legal involvement in student disciplinary processes.
  • Amy Thompson (Head of the Sexual Harassment and Violence Support Service, University of Cambridge) who leads a workshop about the journey of developing a Sexual Harassment and Violence support service.
