Leadership and influence in Student Services: call for session proposals

We’re looking for contributors to lead sessions at our online event about leadership and influence in Student Services. This is an opportunity for you to share your examples of good practice in student support and engagement, and how your skills as a leader have influenced positive change.

Leading a session at our event is a good way to share good practice, explore new ideas with colleagues, and develop your professional confidence and standing. If your proposal for a session is accepted, each session leader and co-presenter will get a free place to attend the entire event.

Please submit your session proposals by 10:00 (BST) on Friday 5 April 2024.

About the event

Leadership and influence in Student Services explores the skills and expertise of Student Services leadership, how these can inform good practice, and how Student Services can influence university and sector partners to develop and enhance the student experience.

The event takes place online on Wednesday 22 May 2024 from 09:00 to 16:00 (BST).

What should my session be about?

We’re looking for 30 minute sessions (presentations, workshops or discussions) about:

  • Projects or interventions in any area of Student Services that you’ve led to develop support services and enhance the student experience.
  • How you’ve influenced good practice through collaboration, with colleagues across the university and/or working with other sector partners and the wider community.
  • How you’ve developed your leadership skills and drawn on your expertise to lead and influence positive change.

You can draw on examples from your own professional development journey, or discuss case studies of your projects or interventions.

Your session should include time for questions and answers (at least five minutes).

Your session will be delivered online in a Zoom meeting format. You can use presentations, videos or online interaction tools (such as Slido or Mentimeter) to make your session as engaging as possible. The event team will help you with the setup and running of your session.

Who can submit a proposal?

We welcome session proposals from:

  • AMOSSHE members
  • Colleagues at AMOSSHE member organisations
  • Other education providers
  • Higher education sector associations and bodies
  • Corporate and not-for-profit organisations

from the UK and around the world. You may choose to lead your session along with partner organisations that you collaborate with to support your work.

How many speakers can take part in a session?

In our experience two speakers is the right number for a 30 minute session, so we recommend that. Please consider whether the number of co-presenters is appropriate for your session to ensure everyone has time to contribute.

Can I get help with my proposal idea?

If you have an idea for a session proposal, but you’re not sure how to develop it, please get in touch. Email the AMOSSHE National Office team at info@amosshe.org.uk for help and advice.

If you’re an AMOSSHE member, you can also rely on your network of Student Services peers to help develop or co-present a session. Email the network at AMOSSHE@jiscmail.ac.uk or log in to post on our discussion forum.

How do I submit a proposal?

To submit a proposal, complete this online form:

  • A summary of the learning outcomes for attendees (150 words or less).
  • Details for each presenter / session leader (names, job title, organisation, email address, access requirements).

Please submit your session proposals by 10:00 (BST) on Friday 5 April 2024.

You’ll receive an email to confirm that we've received your proposal. If you don’t receive this confirmation within a week of submission, please contact info@amosshe.org.uk. We'll give you feedback about your proposals no later than week commencing 15 April 2024.

How many proposals can I submit?

You can submit as many session proposals for consideration as you like. For each one, please submit a separate form.

How does AMOSSHE decide which proposals to accept?

The event team will carefully consider all session proposals, and choose the successful proposals by asking the following questions:

  • Is the session engaging, informative, inspiring?
  • Is the session relevant to Student Services professionals and current priorities for the sector?
  • Does the session engage with the event themes?
  • Will the session contribute to AMOSSHE members’ continuing professional development?

Your session proposal should answer these questions satisfactorily.

What happens if my proposal is accepted?

We’ll let you know whether your proposal is successful no later than week commencing 15 April 2024. If your session proposal is accepted, the event team will give you feedback about your proposal, and may make suggestions to further enhance the session.

We’ll also discuss and agree with you an advance date for you to send a copy of your completed presentation and any other session materials. These materials will be made available in the members’ area of this website following the event, unless there are issues of confidentiality or inaccuracy that would make this inappropriate.

We’ll also record your session and share the video with attendees and AMOSSHE members after the event. If you prefer not to be recorded, please let us know when you submit your proposal.

If your proposal for a session is accepted, each session leader and co-presenter will get a free place to attend the entire event.
