Presentation
This session will introduce the Unite Foundation’s Blueprint for #HomeAtUniversity, a guide for universities in building a safe and stable home for care experienced and estranged students.
This group of students face multiple barriers to higher education. The gaps in their educational outcomes are stark – and this session will explore the current context. There is growing awareness that a safe and stable home matters – from the Department for Education, through the Social Market Foundation’s recommendations from their report ‘Care and Learning in Higher Education’, through the accommodation element of the Russell Group’s consistent support package for care leavers, and through data on the impact of a safe and stable home on student outcomes.
Using current case studies from approaches taken in different universities, we’ll explore six elements of a safe and stable home, focusing on the crucial role played by Student Services.
The session will also explore the multiple benefits to a university of building a safe and stable home and introduce the resources and support available from the Unite Foundation.
