This session outlines good practice when implementing compassionate communications. Géraldine Dufour and Pete Quinn will discuss three case studies from providers in England and Wales who have taken on the process that’ll be useful for Student Services and beyond. Delegates will get the opportunity to hear about insights from recent implementations that also includes accounts on the impact of non-compassionate communications in higher education for students and staff. It’ll also highlight practical quick wins that can be immediately implemented.
Géraldine Dufour is a leading expert in matters related to university wellbeing, counselling and mental health with over 20 years of HE experience. She is Chair of the European Association for International Education (EAIE) Student and Alumni Services Committee, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Essex.
Géraldine was formerly Head of Counselling at the University of Cambridge, chair of national committees and a founding member of research groups in student mental health and wellbeing. She is a member of AMOSSHE and offers specialist consultancy, supervision and training to HEIs.

Pete Quinn has worked with and for the Universities of Oxford and York where he was Head of Disability, Deputy Head of EDI and Director of Student Support. Since 2016 he has worked as a consultant with leading organisations throughout the UK and the Asia Pacific Region mainly on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion projects often with a focus on neurodiversity, well-being and confidence. As well as working with many UK universities, including Bristol, Leeds, Middlesex, Greenwich, York St John, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Pete has collaborated on projects with many non HE related organisations both in the UK and internationally.
