Compassionate leadership in higher education

12.35pm – 1.35pm BST, 2 July 2026 ‐ 1 hour

Room: Gateshead suite 3

Workshop

This workshop introduces leaders in higher education to the core principles of Compassion‑Focused Therapy (CFT) and explores how these can transform leadership practice in complex, high‑pressure academic environments.

Using CFT’s evidence‑based model of the three emotional regulation systems (threat, drive, and soothing), participants will learn how compassion can reduce threat-based cultures, improve psychological safety, and foster more inclusive, stabilising leadership behaviours.

The session will blend short theory inputs with practical, discussion‑based activities tailored to higher education contexts such as managing change, supporting staff wellbeing, and navigating competing demands. Participants will explore how compassionate leadership supports clearer communication and more consistent responses under stress.
