Presentation
Australia’s journey in tackling gender-based violence in higher education has evolved through years of sector-wide initiatives, national surveys, and cultural interventions. The Universities Australia Respect.Now.Always.(RNA) program, launched in 2016, has been pivotal, grounded in student-centred design and informed by data from landmark surveys like the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Change the Course report and the National Student Safety Survey.
Established at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in 2018, the UTS Respect.Now.Always. (RNA) Program has tackled the root causes of gender-based violence by challenging enabling attitudes and behaviours through whole-of-community engagement and participatory design to drive lasting cultural change. Grounded in community-centred research, the program uses innovative, accessible and novel methods to build sexual violence literacy and intervention skills, engaging more than 16,000 current and prospective students, staff, and community members annually.
Our efforts have led to measurable impact: reduced rates of sexual violence, sector-leading awareness of support services at UTS, and national recognition through a Good Design Award (Best in Class), Social Impact.
In this session, you'll hear from Catharine Pruscino, Program Manager of the UTS Respect.Now.Always. Program, and Chair of the Australian Universities Prevention Connection (UPC).
