Advance HE Fellowship

Advance HE Fellowship is a professional recognition programme designed around teaching excellence in higher education, but professional services colleagues can also apply for fellowship.

Advance HE is a member-led charity that works to improve higher education for staff, students and society, with a particular focus on teaching and learning, governance, leadership development and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Fellowships are established and recognised in UK higher education and have been adopted by increasing numbers of higher education providers globally, from the Americas to Australasia. Fellowship brings you a range of benefits:

  • Demonstrates commitment to teaching, learning and the student experience, in diverse academic or professional settings.
  • Entitles you to use the post-nominal letters (AFHEA, FHEA, SFHEA, PFHEA).
  • Provides a valuable measure of success, which is increasingly recognised by international institutions.
  • Demonstrates to learners and other stakeholders the professionalism that colleagues and institutions bring to teaching and/or supporting learning.
  • Fellowship is increasingly used by employers across the higher education sector as a condition of recruitment, probation, progression and promotion.

Consolidate or document your experience

As a busy Student Services leader you’ll have developed a wealth of experience and expertise throughout your career. But the UK Student Services sector doesn’t have a formal framework for you to record and document what you know. So you may want to consider other ways to consolidate or document your expertise in a sector-recognised format. This can be useful if you’re looking to advance in your career or argue for more pay or status.

Skills to develop

Identify areas of Student Services expertise that you need to develop

Being a great Student Services leader isn’t just about experience. It’s about knowing your strengths, spotting what you want to get better at and staying open to learning. The best leaders keep growing, lean on their networks and find new ways to face challenges with confidence.
