Consider the next phase of your career

Have you been a Student Services leader for a long time? Have you developed broad and deep expertise over the years? Have you progressed as far as you can or want to in Student Services leadership? If so, you may be considering the next phase of your career and life, for example, higher education consultancy, moving out of Student Services and/or higher education altogether, or retirement.

Here are some resources to help you research these options.

Consider higher education consultancy

Many colleagues in our AMOSSHE community have established themselves as independent higher education consultants, specialising in Student Services. As consultants, these colleagues often work with higher education providers as critical friends to help with reviews of services. They also undertake special projects, provide advice, mentoring, and/or training, and contribute their expertise to influence good practice in the sector. Connect with these colleagues to find out more.

Our membership network

AMOSSHE is the UK’s professional association for Student Services leaders in higher education. Our members include the most experienced Student Services leaders in the country, dealing with real and demanding challenges every day. As a member, you become part of a supportive community, helping each other out and promoting good practice.

Move out of Student Services and/or higher education

Student Services leaders sometimes move to more senior positions within higher education, for example becoming registrars or responsible for the broader remits that include the student experience. If this interests you, it may be useful to speak to a careers coach, or a recruitment consultant who specialises in higher education leadership. A coach or recruitment consultant will also be able to help you adapt your skills and experience to roles outside of higher education.

Consider retirement

If you’re thinking that you’re ready to finish your Student Services leadership career, it’s time to take stock of your financial situation, so that you can plan for a comfortable retirement. Here are some resources that may help you:

  • Citizens Advice has some resources about preparing your finances for retirement.
  • Age UK also has resources about retirement, including pensions advice and preparing yourself mentally for retirement.
