Rotimi Akinsete
During his time on the Executive, Director of Wellbeing (University of Surrey)
Being part of the Executive was a genuinely enriching experience. It offered a unique opportunity to help shape key conversations and priorities across the sector, while also deepening my understanding of the broader landscape beyond my own institution. Engaging with colleagues from different regions and professional contexts brought valuable perspectives that challenged and expanded my thinking.
My time on the Executive coincided with both the COVID-19 pandemic and the heightened awareness brought about by the Black Lives Matter movement. These were critical moments for the sector, and being part of those conversations—helping to navigate uncertainty, while also advocating for more inclusive and equitable approaches—was both challenging and deeply meaningful.
As the only Executive Member of African descent during my time and in the history of the Executive, the role also carried particular significance. It highlighted both the importance and the responsibility of bringing perspectives that are often underrepresented into national discussions. Being able to contribute that voice, while working alongside a committed and highly efficient National Office, strengthened my appreciation for the impact that thoughtful, collaborative leadership can have.
The annual conferences were a vital part of the experience, offering valuable opportunities to meet and connect with members in person. Regional meetings also played an important role, creating spaces to listen, exchange ideas, and help shape policy directions grounded in the realities of practice across the UK. I also had the opportunity to represent AMOSSHE internationally, including a visit to the US to attend the NASPA conference, which further broadened my perspective on student services and sector-wide collaboration.
I found the role both professionally rewarding and personally affirming, and I would strongly encourage others to consider joining the Executive—it’s a meaningful way to influence, learn, and connect.
