From waiting lists to wellness
The University needed to respond to an increase in demand of students seeking support, whilst also looking to complement its internal resource, ensuring complex risk was always carefully managed.
In the past year, Howden’s Student Assistant Programme has supported over 2,300 student contacts, and created a substantial reduction in waiting times for students supported in-house by over 65%.
Impact achieved over an academic year:
- Over 2,300 student telephone calls for in the moment support
- 431 referrals from university staff of students requiring support
- 1,138 structured therapy sessions delivered to students
- Waiting times to see a mental health practitioner reduced from an average of 29 days to 9.6 days
- 37 monitored cases, ensuring students who are most at risk are closely monitored and receive the correct level of support
- 19% of calls taken outside of campus opening hours
- Over 200 university staff attended awareness sessions to learn how to support a student in the moment
Howden’s partnership with Lancaster University represents a dynamic and innovative approach to student mental health and wellbeing support. We've created a comprehensive support system that goes far beyond traditional service delivery, addressing the complex and evolving needs of students in today's challenging academic landscape.
