Case-study: Supporting student mental health 24/7/365 at scale
As demand for student support surges worldwide, many universities struggle to meet the need alone. This case-study explores how the state of New Jersey launched a historic, first-in-the-country partnership with Uwill to provide 24/7/365 comprehensive mental health and wellness support for students at 45 colleges and universities in New Jersey.
New Jersey universities had been facing an unprecedented rise in mental health needs - with a diverse student population (50%+ BME students) known to have low engagement with traditional support. Therefore, in 2023, New Jersey launched a historic state-wide partnership with Uwill, offering all students immediate access to Uwill’s 24/7/365 counselling (with same day appointments, students choice of counsellor), crisis support, and wellness programming, seamlessly complementing universities’ counselling centers and enhancing engagement and support. Key partnerships insights include:
- Increased level of support: 78,000+ counselling sessions, 1,200+ crisis connections
- Enhanced out of hours support: 30% accessed support out of hours, 12,000+ counselling sessions during holidays
- Robust diverse engagement: 85% seek support from BME counsellors, 9% seek support from bilingual counsellors
- Strong student satisfaction: 9.5/10 feedback rating from students
- Supporting students who did not engage before: 50%+ accessing Uwill had never had an appointment at the counselling center
This partnership also highlights how this support can benefit universities of all sizes, with New Jersey universities ranging from 1,000+ students to 50,000+ students. Read about the partnership here and case-study here.
