Your guide to submit a successful proposal for The Pivot

Here's an updated article providing you with tips to submit a proposal to increase your chances of being featured.

We’re excited to have released the first edition for our online magazine. This project has been in the works for the last year and a half and it aligns perfectly with our 2025 to 2030 strategic plan to provide our community with opportunities to excel, innovate and contribute.

It’s one thing to develop the platform, but I need your contributions to create the magazine so that it impacts the wider sector and our community. As you can imagine, I've figured out the types of proposals that are successful, and I know what works, and what doesn't. So, below I share the secrets. If you're still unsure about submitting your proposal after reading this article, drop me a line so we can have an informal conversation about your piece.

Why submit to The Pivot?

This is the platform where the voice of Student Services professionals matters. Our magazine was created as a new perk for you to get involved and empower you to share your perspectives and contribute your expertise to shape the future of the sector.

Submitting a proposal gives you the opportunity to:

  • Share your expertise and insights with a wide audience.
  • Highlight the impactful work of your provider or team.
  • Contribute to shaping the future of Student Services through thought leadership.

So, if you’ve got something to say, now’s your chance!

How to craft a strong proposal

Find your angle

Do you have a unique case study, a fresh perspective on a sector challenge, or a personal story that others can learn from? If you’re passionate about it, chances are we can learn from it. And if we haven’t heard it before, we’ll probably love it.

Keep it snappy

We prefer articles that are engaging, and have personality. Write concisely, avoid jargon, and make sure its something people will enjoy reading with their morning cuppa.

Make it practical

Can it be put into action? If you’re sharing a success story, highlight the key takeaways. If you’re discussing a challenge, suggest ways to tackle it. The more useful, the better!

And what about it?

Why should our readers care? Your proposal should make it clear why they should be interested. It also helps the reviewing panel quickly understand the issue or opportunity your piece addresses.

Format for impact

Avoid big block of text. Use subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs to keep things digestible.

Be yourself

We’re not looking for the next Shakespeare. Just be yourself. Write as you speak, and let your topic shine on its own.

Deadline to submit your proposal for the upcoming edition is 17:00 (BST) on Thursday 16 October 2025. Head to our submission page Your voice in The Pivot and follow the simple steps. We welcome articles, case studies, reflective pieces, and more. Be creative, but also the more photos, the better!
