Children and young people's mental health: inquiry
The Education and Health and Social Care Committees have jointly launched an inquiry into the mental health of children and young people.
The UK Parliament Education and Health and Social Care Committees opened a joint inquiry to explore the relationship between children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing, the support available to them and how well they’re able to thrive and succeed in education. The consultation sought the opinions of both the education and healthcare sectors to understand the barriers to partnership working between education and healthcare providers, and the roles each sector should play in improving young people’s mental health.
All of our member organisations have dedicated teams with a remit for supporting students with mental health conditions. As a result, we were well placed to respond to the call for evidence on behalf of Student Services professionals who design and deliver mental health support for students in higher education.
The response aligns with our commitment to support, inform and empower our community of Student Services leaders to enhance the higher education student experience and help students fulfil their potential. Most specifically, submitting a response to the inquiry has allowed us to contribute our community’s voice and expertise to influencing the future of policy in this area. We’ll continue responding to inquiries that enable our members to share their expertise, as it’s our objective to amplify their knowledge and contribute to the development and success of higher education.
In our response, we outline our view on the particular responsibilities of the higher education and healthcare sectors in supporting student mental health. We’re committed to working in closer partnership with healthcare colleagues to ensure there’s a collaborative, coordinated and effective approach to young people’s mental health provision.
