Take care of yourself as leader

Student Services leadership can be demanding, stressful and at times upsetting. You’re responsible for the welfare and wellbeing of others (your staff teams as well as students), you hold and manage risk, and you often deal with difficult topics and situations (including death, bereavement, suicide, harassment, racism, sexual violence and trauma).

Don’t underestimate the impact this can have on you. When you’re supporting others, it’s easy to neglect supporting yourself. Like they say on aeroplanes, put on your own mask before helping others.

Reach out to your networks

When you’re working in a stressful environment (and especially when you’re the only person in your organisation facing the same challenges as you) it’s important to reach out to your peer communities for support. Our members and colleagues often find comfort and support when they discover that they’re not alone, that others are in the same situation or facing similar challenges. Our AMOSSHE network may be right for you. We’re the UK’s professional association for Student Services leaders in higher education. Our members include the most experienced Student Services leaders in the country, at all management and leadership levels.
